One percent of Jewish Israelis can read and write in Arabic. Yet, according to a recent bill passed in the Knesset, Jewish schools are required to teach Arabic from first grade onward. This isn't the most inspiring statistic. These results speak volumes to the impact language ideologies have on Arabic language education, but say very little about those who choose to study Arabic once it is no longer compulsory.
